Mammography at The Women’s Health Center Mammography at the Women’s Health Center is x-ray imaging of the breast which is used to detect tumors and cysts, often much earlier than can be detected by touch. At our Women’s Health Center, advanced mammography equipment combined with experienced and friendly technologists provides high quality diagnostic studies. The mammography equipment compresses the breast so that all breast tissue can be more clearly seen on the film. The pressure needed for compression for a high-quality mammogram may cause some brief discomfort but is necessary for a high quality examination. The mammography service is accredited by the American College of Radiology and is a certified mammography facility by the US Food and Drug Administration.
The Women’s Health Center features a full spectrum of screening, diagnostic and interventional services including the following:
Detection: An Important Part of Breast Care A breast self-exam is an important preventive measure that all women should perform monthly. The Breast Center offers free breast self-exam training , by our nurse navigator, when you request this through scheduling. While a regular breast self-exam is very helpful, it is not a substitute for a mammogram. This quick, safe and painless X-ray can detect breast lumps up to five years before they can be felt by hand. Because the risk of breast cancer increases as you mature, the American Cancer Society makes the following recommendations:
If you are age 20 to 39:
- Have a clinical breast exam by your healthcare provider at least every three years
- Do a breast self-exam each month
If you are age 40 and over:
- Have a mammogram every year
- Have a clinical breast exam by your healthcare provider at least every three years
- Do a breast self-exam each month
